What's yo name gurrllll

There are so many names out there, how do you chose which one is right for your child? I mean...it will only be his or her name....for the rest.of.his.life.

No pressure....

Our baby's name? Saw it on Pintrest!
But it feels like a lot of pressure. I probably took it even a little more personally than was normal....I'm sure. I say this because I have a strange name...I mean, not like awkwardly strange that is a completely different language. But I remember in elementary school misspelling my name on purpose just so it was more normal. You see, I'm named after my Aunt Leigh-Anne, in the Haley Mills generation. My mom loved the name and wanted to include my aunt, thus my name...Haleigh.

Growing up with a "strangely" spelled name was frustrating. On field trips all the other kids were able to get the key chains with their names on them...and back in the 80's and early 90s...key chains were a big deal people! If you didn't have 50 on your backpack, you simply weren't cool. Not only could I never find things with my name on them, but people always and still to this day, mispronounce my name. If I got even a penny for the number of times I get called Holly or Huh-lee like I am some foreigner...I would be a...somewhat rich woman!

So when I knew I was going to marry J J and I started talking kids, I made a spreadsheet. {Yes I know I'm a little AR but who actually enjoys being disorganized??}One page for boy names, and one for girl's names. On each page I did separate columns for first names and middle names.....I had to see what they would look like side by side! I put on names that I saw on baby sites, names I heard in passing, names I saw in baby name books or novels, and names I had loved since I was a child.

I had already narrowed down the names that I loved more than all the others, but when J and I found out we were expecting it was so amazing sitting down to that spreadsheet I had spent too much time on...and saying these are the two winners-one boy name, one girl name. It wasn't stressful like a lot of my friends have said it was, it was good knowing that J trusted me and knew I had done my research. {We tried to stay away from names that were on the top 100 lists or that we thought were over used}But at the end of the day, any time I heard a name or saw a name that I absolutely loved I would ask him what he thought about it...and it was either vetoed for being too weird or placed on the spreadsheet so we would never forget it!

When working on the spreadsheet I really got to say, "what will his initials be" "what will his potential nicknames be" "will he sound like a cute little baby boy when he is an adult trying to get a real job?" {I had a guy friend growing up whose initials were A.S.S.....needless to say, he was teased}. So we considered spelling, initials, nicknames, the whole nine.

Why talk about this topic, you ask? Well because I get email updates from a few different baby type websites. The email that sparked this post? "What Baby Name Suites You". That seemed a little ironic to me because the name shouldn't fit me...it should fit our son...but I couldn't resist.

Here's what my "test results" said...
You seem to be a pretty active person and an independent thinker who likes doing instead of just talking. If you want your child to be strong-minded and leave his or her mark on the world, you should consider baby names that people associate with being creative, smart, active, and strong.T

How do you or did you pick your baby's name?

Blogging Hazzard

Okay, I want to start this lovely little posty post off apologizing. Blogging when you're grumpy....is a blogging hazzard.

The day I wrote my 29 week post? I was a little extremely grumpy...

I could use this opportunity to vent again about all the reasons I was grumpy but....there's no point. I went to bed at 7:30pm last night and am feeling completely refreshed.

So this is my formal apology :) Sowwy guyssss

I promise to try to only post when I am not extremely grumpy

So...since that blogging hazzard I have a few funny commentaries between Hubby and I, enjoy....

Me: *plops on couch* ugh I.am.so.exhausted. Today seriously felt like the longest day ever and if I don't get normal sleep soon, I'm really going to lose my shit
Husband: Why are you so exhausted?
Me:........you can't be serious?

Me: oooo are you getting milk?
Husband: No, I got some eggnog at the store
Me: Ew, I never liked eggnog. I think my dad used to put Crown Royal in it
Husband: Ew, now that's gross
Me: Let me smell it...maybe I will try it when this parasite...I mean baby comes out
Husband: ....
Me: Oh my gosh I'm going to throw up, that smells disgusting
Husband: It smells fine....it smells like eggnog
Me: Do not breathe on me....go upstairs right now and brush your nasty eggnog breath

You're welcome :)

29 weeks...holy cow that's 7 months

So, today...I would like a one way ticket to complain town. I don't need round trip, why you ask? Well because I am fairly sure I would like an extended stay for say...oh....the next 11 weeks.

I am still really enjoy being pregnant except for the insane back pain, inability to sleep, exhaustion and new this week? More leaky boob {which I guess technically isn't new}. Sorry I'm not sorry for the overshare.This week also brought to you by the letter B...for breakout because that is what is happening on one section of my face....which never happens to me...ugh see....ticket needed to complain town...STAT

How far along? 29 weeks
Countdown: 11 weeks left!
Size: The size of a butternut squash
Total weight gain: +16 lbs total
Maternity clothes? Yes, but still mixing them with some of my regular clothes
Stretch marks? Same--using a coco butter oil, still only the 2 on my left side.
Sleep: Not enough of it
Best moment this week: Reading an entire book on Sunday
Miss Anything? My boobs NOT leaking...being able to see my toes when I look down...being able to get comfortable enough to sleep...actually being able to sleep in general
Movement: Lots, especially when I lay down at night for bed.
Food cravings: Actually butternut squash soup sounds really delish....
Sneaky peak of maternity pics
Anything making you queasy or sick:Ew, last night J was drinking Egg Nog...and I haven't really ever been a fan, but I am up for trying new things (Don't panic...I knew I couldn't drink the Egg Nog because it has raw Egg in it....but I wanted to smell it) I almost lost it....then I made J go straight upstairs and brush his teeth because I could still smell it. Annnndddd Egg Nog remains on my that is disgusting list :)
Gender: Baby Boy!
Labor Signs: Braxton hicks and last night I was getting a weird cramping in my lower back that went away once I laid down
Symptoms: Pregnancy brain, braxton hicks and lower back pain for sure, also the continuation of leaky boob, round ligament pain (that scared the poo out of me yesterday) a localized breakout on my face, and some others that I refuse to go into-sorry
Belly Button in or out? Barely in...
Wedding rings on or off? On
Happy or Moody most of the time: Getting more moody...but that is because I'm barely sleeping
Looking forward to: Sleeping this weekend. I have no plans except to do a friend's makeup for a halloween party, other than that, my butt isn't getting out of bed! And that decision is final. Ohhh! And, a friend is popping by to take a few maternity pictures!
Next Appointment: November 1!

Picture will be up tomorrow hopefully...that's the day I'm planning on actually doing my hair instead of just throwing it up in a pony...which for those of you who know me....is not how I usually roll {see...ticket still needed}

Liebster Award....oh you shouldn't have!

Eek! I got nominated for the Liebster Award! Wait....what is that? Pop over and visit Lounging with Lindsey...after all, she's the reason you're getting all of this amazing knowledge :)

Liebster Award rules:
1. Each blogger should post 11 random facts about themselves.
2. Answer the 11 questions the tagger has set for you, and then create 11 new questions for the bloggers you pass the award to.
3. Choose 11 bloggers [with less than 200 followers] to pass the award to and link them in your post.
4. Go to their page and tell them about the award.
5. No tag backs!

Random facts about me:

1. This is a wopper....I am a huge control freak. And I swear it's genetic.....sorry Momma...I'm callin' you out!

2. I was a compulsive nervous nail biter until right before J and I got married...then one day....I just stopped.

3.
Sometimes I am too sarcastic for my own good and people don't understand....oftentimes J has to ask me if I'm joking or if I'm actually serious....

4.
I absolutely hate the word moist. It makes my skin crawl. *shudders*

5.
I probably shouldn't but sometimes I poke my belly to see if Hudson is still alive and will kick me back....which leads me to my next random fact

6. I am petrified of friends, family, animals dying around me. Two weeks ago One time my Daddy was asleep in his chair and I purposefully tripped then coughed to wake him up slash see if he was breathing...sorry Dad haha. Oh and sometimes I'll poke the dogs with my feet....you know...just to make sure...

7.
This sort of coincides with fact 1....I have to have a plan. I cannot go into a situation without knowing exactly what I need to be prepared and what will happen...in timeline format. J sometimes gets really annoyed because I will ask him 20 times what the plan is....and if he doesn't have one I keep asking until he does....and most of the time {as he now tells me} he just makes something up so I'll leave it alone....which usually appeases me until things don't happen exactly that way....then I panic and lose my shit :)

8.
I have to have my toenails painted at all times. One day I hadn't repainted them after I took off the polish and J asked "What's wrong with your toes"....that should tell you something about my obsession with having my toes painted.

9.
I am super girly but take me out in a boat and you better be ready for a "who can catch the biggest fish first" competition. Fishing is my weakness...but don't ask me to hunt....

10.
I have tattoos...and I love them. I have a side piece that goes from my arm pit down to my hip bone, a tribute to my grandpa, Pop Pop who passed from pancreatitis very suddenly back in 2007 and some other small ones-but that is by far my favorite and the most meaningful....If I wasn't worried about how they would look as I got older I am sure that I would get more daring ones on my arms/wrists/back of neck....but for now...I'll stick for the ones that can be hidden if I so choose.

11.
I have a super high pain tolerance. When I was little, my sister and I decided to "Wash" a mirror that was leaned up against a tree, needless to say it broke and we both had to get stitches. My sister...well she had to be put in one of those straight jacket things and me? I asked them to prop me up so I could watch

Questions from Lindsey:

1. What was your favorite vacation?
Hmm it's really hard to choose, but one summer in high school my family rented a house in the keys for an entire month. (We usually only spent a week or two down there so the month was amazing) We fished and caught lobster almost every day and spent the evenings after cooking what we caught in Key West at Mallory Square enjoying the music and culture....I spent lots of hours on the phone that summer with J actually...
2. What is something you've done that not many other people have done?
My dad, sister and I did a night dive on a family vacation in Curacao, Mexico. The best part? I was a little all over the place so I was the guide's "buddy" and we found an octopus. She had me put my hand on the rock where he was sitting and he climbed up my arm--coolest experience EVER
3. Are you an iPhone user? Would you have it any other way?
Yes and absolutely not!!! I used to be team blackberry but....I'm a traitor and am obsessed.
4. Are you a homebody or someone who needs to be out and about all the time?
J and I are definitely homebodies. I used to be super social and have to be out all.the.time but something changed when I got back from living in Italy....I just wanted to spend time at home together.
5. Is there something you're looking forward to in the near future?
Bringin' this baby home!! And finishing the nursery....not in this order haha
6. What is one of the best books you've read?
That's a really tough question. I read...a lot. So recently....the best book I have read is Now You See Her by James Patterson...seriously...go read it....right now
7. What is something you know you shouldn't spend money on, but often find yourself doing anyway?
This could potentially be a very long list.....but I'll give you the shortened answer of shoes/clothes.
8. What is your favorite thing to cook? Care to share the recipe?
I have a killer Baked Ziti Recipe...I can email to whomever would like it...it is seriously delish and super super easy!
9. Do you buy lottery tickets?
No...but I really should! Especially those, $$ a week for life ones!
10. What is the thing you miss about home the most when you're on vacation?
Not worrying about what I forgot. I told you I'm a control freak....packing stresses me out.
11. What is your favorite thing about the holidays?
The smells. For Thanksgiving it's apple cider with oranges, cinnamon and allspice and Christmas...it's allll BALSAM...I'm slightly obsessed.

My nominees: (I don't have 11...sorry guys...all my other blogger peeps have well over 200 fans)

1. Artsee Fartsee
2. Keepin up with the Johnstons
3. Our Family Perspective
4. A Prince and Prozac
5. Tiffany and Chad in Real Life
6. Priester's Peace

1. Who's your biggest celebrity crush?

2. What is something you completely dread doing?
3. If you had to define your style, what would you say?
4. Chocolate or vanilla?
5. What's your go to outfit? Something maybe you have had in your closet for years and just can't let go of...
6.  Your favorite room in your home...and why?
7.  If you could change absolutely anything in your house, what would it be?
8. Dogs or cats?
9.
What is your best childhood memory?
10. Live on the edge or play it safe?
11. What is the one thing in your life that you have wanted the most? Whether you already have it or are still trying to get it!

Now chop chop...don't dilly dally :)

28 Weeks...helloooo third trimester!

I am well on my way to accomplishing all of the home projects that have piled up, that need to be finished before Bebe Hud gets here. J has been a HUGE help in not telling me I'm being a spaz-which I am almost positive I have been...slightly...maybe. :)
The downstairs powder room {half bath} is painted and has the stripes-I'll be doing another post shortly to show you how it turned out! {For those of you who don't follow my Instagram}. I found a new mirror and am in love with the new look-so keep an eye out for that post!
I have also just completed the hunt for a dresser for the nursery! Thanks to my fabulous friend, C who helped when I felt like all hope was lost. My mom is on me like a fly on...well you know the saying...about painting SO that project will be waiting until around Thanksgiving when my parents will be here to help me refinish that sucker! I'll share pictures and the full dresser hunt story then :)

And now the moment you have all been waiting for...{I know you're on the edge of your seat here....}

The best and the worst...

The best thing a pregnant lady can hear? Here is a brief list of the things I have heard lately from friends, co-workers and family that I absolutely love hearing:
27 weeks 3 days!
*You look amazing! {why, thank you}
*Pregnancy definitely agrees with you! {I take this as a compliment any day of the week, I love being pregnant!}
*I wish my skin was that clear and my hair was that shiny {I realize these things will not last...and that my hair will eventually fall out some...but I'll take 'em while I can!}
*You don't even look pregnant from the back! {Well thank you....thank you very much!!!}
*You're all baby! {That IS the point....}
*Your husband is a lucky man! {I like to think so too :) although when I was told this, it was by another man and was a little creepy....but still complimentary nonetheless}

*I am so jealous of your baby bump! I never had a bump like that {To many, this might not be a compliment...but to me, it is! I am completely and totally embracing this pregnancy, little Hudson is a gift from God and my baby bump is proof that he is alive, growing and healthy}

Things people say because they think they're being nice....but really I want to punch them in the face. Luckily there are only a few of these:

*Roll it on in here... {uhm, I'm sorry...roll WHAT on in here?}
*I can already tell....he's going to be a big baby {I'm sorry...and how can you tell that?}
*When he kicks your stomach goes "bluhbblubhblub" {that is my interpretation of the sound effect that was used....is that supposed to be a ripple effect? Like why would you say that???}
*Woah, you are so much bigger than the last time I saw you! {Uh....well...babies tend to grow....and I hope you mean that my stomach is much bigger...and not the rest of me!}

When and if you were pregnant...what did you like to hear, and what did people say that made you want to punch them in the face??

Get excited! It's give-away time!!

So remember a little while back I told y'all that I finally decided how I wanted to decorate our master bedroom....{over a year later} and that I found these AMAZEballs pillows on Etsy?

You don't remember? Really? Well...that's okay....I guess :) hehe

Well...here's a condensed version. I have decorated every other room in our home except for the master bed/bath and the powder room downstairs. So I finally found a picture on Pintrest and was hooked. I knew exactly what I was going to do.

ALINA Bedspread and 2 cushion covers IKEA Quilted bedspread and cushion cover; extra soft.
 Source: Ikea Alina Bedspread
Then there was the exception...I went to the website that carried the exact bedding? The throw at the end of the bed alone was $300+....oh heck no! So being the savy shopper that I am {humble too...see!} I decided to pretend like I was on that HGTV show....I think it's Design on a Dime...where they find an expensive room and re-create it for less?

Anyways that isn't the point. The point is....I did it. For the bedding part at least, everything else is still in the works. I found this quilt that came with 2 european shams, and the best part? {Besides that it was only $69 at Ikea} it's a Queen/King so it is plenty of blanket since I have a hubby who spins like a top in bed and always messes up the covers. I swear I have to re-make the bed every day.

So I decide that this is the perfect color because it's kind of brown, and kind of tan and what better accent for this color than my most favorite color in the entire world? CORAL. I love coral, it's not pink, but it's not orange...but it's bright and refreshing and makes me happy everytime I see it. After I found this, I went on the hunt for coral sheets...which I still haven't found {I settled on white for a nice contrast} and decided that the coral pops would be a throw for the end of the bed and some amazing coral accent pillows.

Coral Pillow SET.16x16 inch.Chevron Decorator Pillow Cover..Printed Fabric Front and Back.Chevron.Pillow Set
See! Amazing right???
Enter ElemenOPillows on Etsy! I literally stumbled upon her pillows and y'all....I'm obsessed. So obsessed that I just bought 7 more pillows from her for different rooms in our home. Why not just go to HomeGoods to find pillows, you ask?

Green Pillow Three Piece Set.16x16 inch.Decorator PillowCover.Printed Fabric Front and Back.Lime Green Pillows
These beauties are on their way to my
house as we speak...er...read?
Because Karen is awesome. Our very first pillow order I selected a pair of 14x14 pillows and completely checked out {super giddy and excited about my new purchase} and I get a message from Karen. Do you know how small 14x14 pillows are? Apparently standard pillow sizes are between 18"-20". Y'all...she saved me! She came to me to verify that 14" was the size that I wanted because although they are cute....they are small. I am so glad she did because we ended up going with a 20" and they are THE.PERFECT.SIZE which is why I went back to purchase 7 more pillows.

So, because Karen is so amazingly awesome, we are here today to tell you a little bit about Karen & ElemenOPillows...and do a give-away! ElemenOPillows is offering one lucky person a $40 credit to her shop! I want y'all to meet, Karen! {Details on how to win are below!}
Introduction {Tell us all about you!}:
ElemenOPillows is my creation featuring modern, fresh, chic and affordable PILLOW SLIPCOVERS. A pillow slipcover can be slipped over a pillow you already have or over a pillow form that you purchase from a craft store or online. It's a wonderful way to give a room an instant and inexpensive makeover!

After launching ElemenOPillows on Etsy, I have already filled orders for several thousand pillow slipcovers! The response has been amazing and I absolutely LOVE what I am doing!
The business satisfies my love of fabric, my long-standing love for sewing and decorating and also my entrepreneurial spirit.

I began sewing when I was 7 or 8 years old. A miniature pink plastic sewing machine was one of my most cherished childhood possessions. I would create clothing and home decor (of course) for all of my Barbies and other dolls for hours on end. I simply LOVE creating.

As an adult, my creative itch now gets satisfied by choosing and working with a variety of beautiful fabrics. There are such wonderful patterns, textures, styles and colors from which to choose. And there's such satisfaction in creating an item that has the potential to transform a room for a perfect stranger in another place...often half way around the world.

My husband Chris (who was my high school and college sweetheart) and I have raised three wonderful sons who are all now out of our nest. My studio in this formerly-loud-and -busy-but-now-sadly-empty nest is currently being happily feathered with hundreds and hundreds of pillow cover orders, stacks and stacks of pillow covers and bolt after bolt of fabrics that I so adore! It brings me great joy working with the grown-up version of that little pink sewing machine....

Favorite style:
Anything bright!

How can they pay you??:
I accept checks, money orders, Paypal, Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover cards. Note that Paypal also accepts credit cards and debit cards even if you do not have an account with them.

The best part!:
How do you win...you ask?? Comment below and tell us your favorite style or pattern...and make sure to pin it to your pintrest! A winner will be selected on a number generated on random. Now what are you waiting for?? Comment and go check her shop out!

Pumpkin Topiary...as seen on Pintrest.

I originally thought, when I first saw the picture that they had just found a tall white pumpkin, so I searched and searched every farmer's market looking for one. Then I actually read the blog tutorial and realized...huh they just used a fake orange one and spraypainted it....duh

So, friends, that is what I did. I popped over to Michael's and picked out a tall faux pumpkin {originally $24.95, and on sale for $12.99} along with a long garland of fall leaves. I figured because of all the fall wreaths I make I had plenty of other accents to create the look that I wanted.
Then I went on the hunt for a topiary base....check! Found one at Lowes {$11.99}

When I got home, I taped the top of the pumpkin {so I didn't accidentally spray paint the stem white} and used Rustoleum Ivory to spray the entire Pumpkin.

I had picked out the perfect monogrammed D and printed it off so I could go home and trace directly on the pumpkin.

I was in such a rush to get home from the store(s) and get started that I completely forgot to grab my "D"!

So, after spray painting the pumpkin white I sat down with some Vellum {it's a sort of trace/transfer paper I used while in Art School for my Fashion Sketching classes} and proceeded to tweak and tweak a free-handed "D" until I thought it was perfect. Then I was able to trace my masterpiece onto the pumpkin to be painted over! I selected the slate blue-grey color that matched our front door and shutters.

After completing the "D" I also decided that the stem should match, so it was also painted the slate blue-grey.

And voila, here is the finished product! What do you think?

All hands on dec...orations, it's Fall Y'all!

I literally just laughed out loud at that title....Every week day morning I have a phone date with my sister who lives in Indiana...she is on her way to her amazing internship at a children's hospital and I am on my way into the city and our conversations usually last for around an hour. This morning's topic? Fall!!! And that's when I came up with that oh so witty title :)

It's here ladies and gents and I could not be more excited about it. But I do have a fire under my tush, so-to-speak. Next weekend I am throwing a Bridal Shower for a friend so on my drive home from Virginia on Sunday I had plenty of time to think about alllllll of the things in my home that aren't done....crap.

In order to save space and your time {you're welcome} I have decided I won't list everything, only the things I plan on changing this weekend and next week before the shin-dig {In between my inlaws coming tomorrow night for the weekend including mom, dad, siblings and their girlfriends}
Here's the list...
Slip cover of some sort for our queen anne sofa {it eventually needs to be recovered but who has the time to do that??}
Paint the powder room {downstairs bathroom}
Hang new mirror {Purchased last night...thank youuuuuu HomeGoods}
Install some sort of shelving/built in unit behind toilet in said powder room
Pray that new pillows I ordered yesterday arrive to put on new slip covered sofa
Decorate for fall!
Bake my family's famous pumpkin bread and possibly some other things

I think that's it....that's everything I have to do by next Saturday. Not tooooo bad, right?.....right?....ugh

So here's my idea....I think I just need to bite the bullet and order one of the SureFit stretchy sofa covers...then use fabric pins to tack it in place. It won't be a forever fix but it will look nice for the time being....I hope

Painting of the powder room....I'm thinking of doing a technique I saw on Pintrest. I am going to paint the whole bathroom a tan color, in eggshell. THENNNN I'll get the same color in a high gloss, tape off large rugby stripes, and paint stripes with the high gloss. That way, it will look like a pretty satin and matte stripe-and hopefully make the small powder room look a little bit larger.

Last night I went to HomeGoods {hoping to find a pretty throw and possibly some fall decorations} and came out with this awesome off white wood framed mirror. Perfect for our powder room...that still has the builder mirror in it. There is just something about putting your own mirror up that can really make a bathroom feel more home-y. I thought I had a picture but...I don't so I'll take one of the powder room...a before and after for sure!

Install some sort of built in unit behind the toilet for storage....this is where my amazingly handy FIL comes in. After picking his brain a little the other night, he agreed to look at a picture, tell me what I needed and point me in the right direction. He is usually suckered into our home projects because he is really talented {a custom home builder} but this is a project I really want to try....for me and for you DIYers out there. I'm sure that post will be accompanied by some hilarious missteps on my part...

And the last two To-Dos? They're pretty self explanitory...it's fall y'all....what better way to celebrate than with a family tradition extending way past my years here on earth? This pumpkin bread is the best...and we usually make it multiple times throughout the fall season. But my best memory with this recipe? Every Thanksgiving we make this bread....all come down in our jammies {yes I am 25 and still say jammies} and sit huddled together to watch the Macy's Day Parade. Fall isn't fall without pumpkin bread...

What are your fall traditions?

What a day...

Yesterday was a whirlwind...actually since last Thursday has been a whirlwind...

I'll start at the beginning. 4 years ago I found a husky pup for my husband [then boyfriend] for Christmas. My justification? I needed to see how he would be with kids one day...needed to see that he would get up in the middle of the night and had the compassion and love for something as much as me and his family...responsibility for another living thing.
Obviously he passed with flying colors and we have an amazing, well mannered, sweet and loving pup to show for it.
Last Christmas we noticed something with our pooch, Diogi, was off...he was favoring his leg and had slowed down a lot. We originally thought it was hip dysplaysia so we took him to the vet in Virginia [a vet J's family has been using for a very long time] and had tests and x-rays done. He is fine, they told us...hips and lower back could not look better, he's a husky....a breed known for being "wimps". So, their advice? Let him rest and take it easy, there is nothing you can do. And we trusted them.
More recently he has been in a lot of pain, we knew he wasn't faking it but the vet said he was okay....so last week after Diogi stopped being able to climb the stairs for bed at night we went for a second opinion, to a vet I have used here in NC with our fosters and rescue pups.
After a lot of wiggling, poking and prodding they said they thought it was probably early onset arthritis but they wanted to take new films of his hips and this time check his knees too, since they were making weird popping and grinding noises.
When I went to pick him up later Thursday afternoon I was shocked to learn that just like the other Dr., this vet was saying his hips looked amazing...but his knees? Not arthritis like they thought. Like a human, a dog's knee is held together in place by ligaments. In the dogs case, the slope of the bottom bone [his tibia] is at a 30 degree angle [a human's at 5 degrees]. There are 2 ligaments which cross inside the joint...this is called the cruciate ligament, [cruciate, like cross, because they cross over each other].
What they thought was arthritis was not. The pain, atrophy and swelling was from the tearing of the cruciate ligament in not just one, but both of his knees.
The popping and grinding? Well that was apparently his bones rubbing together against where new bone was growing, an attempt his body was making to repair his injuries. How could he have blown both knees, you ask? Well, they said his left [the worse of the two] probably happened first when he was playing with his sister and cousins. Dogs often injure the cruciate ligament when running and have a misstep of some kind-uneven ground and all of that. Then, they said, it is only a matter of time before the second knee gives way. See, when they are over compensating for the lack of function in one knee, it puts added stress on the other knee. It is inevitable.
So, after all of that, J & I spent an evening going through our options and really taking the time to discuss what needed to be done....but knowing it needed to be a quick decision. The next morning, I made an appointment in Hickory, NC with an AMAZING ortho specialist. We went Monday morning and were there all day going through the X-rays, surgery options and pricing. Dr. Born was awesome, she sat on the floor with him and talked to him when she could tell he was scared and nervous. She made sure she answered all of our questions and printed off plenty of information so we could go back to our families and be prepared to answer questions. We decided, after speaking with J's parents, we would leave Diogi that day for surgery.
Monday was our 1 year wedding anniversary....what a way to spend it. We woke up and laid in bed sharing stories from a year ago at that moment. What he and his brothers and best friend were doing...how they were supporting him and embracing him...and the same with my family and friends.
Looking back though, I'm not sure I would change anything. This instance like so many others that arise in your life brings out stress...stress is the truest of tellers of a person's worst characteristics.
In our case? It strengthens what J and I already have....the truest of love, respect, and support for each other. I know I say it all the time, but J is my best friend...if I can't talk to him...I can't talk to anyone.
So as we were leaving the Vet's we decided {since I forgot to get our top tier of cake from my parent's in Va} we would pop by Dairy Queen because...let's be honest...who doesn't like an ice cream cake??
Well fate was not on our side. They didn't have any cakes, so we settled for a dipped cone for me and a pumpkin blizzard for him. We went home and sat on pins and needles waiting for the call that he was out of surgery and in recovery. 2 Lifetime moves and a trip to pizza hut later...{what can I say...we're romantics}we finally got THE call.
Dr. Born said he did phenomenally and that she would call on Tuesday to let us know if he could come home or if he needed to stay until today.
After being in meetings all morning, I got the call. You can come get him and take him home...
I won't even get into getting there...{borrowed a friends Minivan, forgot my house key, wasn't prepared}I get there and Dr. Born goes over everything, guys it was so much information...
Then I sat in an exam room to wait for him. I could hear them out in the hall talking to him and telling him what a good boy he was and he was quiet as a mouse...until they opened the door and he saw me.
Then it was game.over. He cried at caterwalled so loudly {it's my fault for coddling him when he was a puppy} I ended up having to ignore him...even with his head shoved in my lap crying like a big 'ol baby.
Once we got to the lobby and they were finishing all our paperwork up, the nurses had him and were helping me get him in the car {can't really lift a 75lb dog while pregnant} he decided he really had to pee....and not just a little bit. It was like niagra falls and the nile all at once. And all I could do was just watch him pee all over their lobby as the girls laughed and said "welp, guess he really did have to go". Apparently it was raining that morning and he just refused to go out.
But the just of it is...he got home and is now lounging comfortably in our mudroom with 2 extra large dog beds, food, water and his toy pheasant...which he loves.
After doing the outside routine 4 times or so we aren't even using the sheet under his hips, only the leash and walk/hopping very slowly on the 5 rubber shower slip mats lining our kitchen from the mudroom to the back door.
I'll keep everyone up to date on his progress but needless to say I have been a little preoccupied with that and prepping for the craft festival in like...2 days! Ahk!
26 Week post coming soon...I PROMISE!!!
