Saturday Share {Recipe: BBQ Chuck Roast}

Hey y'all! Hope you are having a fabulous Saturday...I know I don't usually talk about and share recipes but this one definitely needs to be shared. I really enjoy cooking {I'll leave the baking to my sister} and since I have been a SAHM for the past few months {heading back to the work front on Monday} I have actually had time to cook dinner for my hubby...although we don't usually get to eat together.

Anyways, I found this UH-mazing app {for the iPhone}, the All Recipes Dinner Spinner. And guys....I am such a fan already. You can shake your phone for something completely new, search for certain ingredients or recipes, or you can select the type of dish, main ingredient and amount of time you'd like to spend cooking. This is so great because if you are like me...you have quite a few random meat products in your freezer and are sick of your usual recipes. So the other night I told J that I wanted to try something new, and he agreed {like he would pass up a good meal}. So I pulled up my dinner spinner and searched for recipes with the main protein being Chuck Roast. Now my parents always purchase a 1/4 cow or pig or whatever and share some with us {thank heavens} so we have a freezer full of random things like chuck roast, stew meat, steak and an insane amount of hamburger. If you enjoy cooking then you know that Chuck Roast is sort of limited in the ways you can cook it because it is a really tough meat and needs to basically be put in a slow cooker...all day.

Getting back on topic, this recipe is for BBQ Chuck Roast, a great summer recipe. The prep time says 15 minutes...but I would say 6 hours & 15 minutes because that's how long it tells you that you need to marinate the meat. However, I didn't see that little tid bit until I was back from the store with the sauce and other extras. SO I only marinated mine for 20 minutes and it was still beyond delicious. Also, the recipe calls for a spit or rotisserie on your grill, and I couldn't remember for the life of me where I placed the doggarn thing so I just sat outside enjoying the Carolina spring and flipped it every 20 minutes, keeping it on low heat with the lid open. {At first I kept the lid closed and the dern thing caught fire so open lid it is!}

The full recipe is below. I decided I wanted to make this a truly Southern Meal like my Mema & Mom would make so I paired it with home made coleslaw and hushpuppies. Both SUPER easy to make, so I have included the hushpuppie recipe below as well. I won't put the coleslaw recipe because....well....I don't use a recipe and couldn't tell you measurements to save my life :) This is something you should know about me in advance...I am NOT good at following recipes....but I did try to follow this one as close as possible!

BBQ Chuck Roast
Prep Time: 6 hours {15 to prep and 6 hours to marinate}
Cook time: 2 hours
Ingredients:
1 {5lb} Chuck Roast
1 cup BBQ Sauce of your choosin {I used a new kind and LOVED it, called Southern Style by Masterpiece...}
1 cup teriyaki sauce
1 {12 fluid oz} can or bottle beer {I used Miller Lite}
3 teaspoons minced garlic
3 teaspoons thinly sliced fresh ginger root {I used ground ginger...same amount}
1 onion, finely chopped {I didn't know this recipe called for onion so I s'pose I left this out...oops!}
3 teaspoons coarsely ground black pepper {I didn't measure this...just added it til I thought it was good}
2 teaspoons salt

Directions:
1. In a large bowl {big enough to hold marinade and meat}, mix bbq sauce, teriyaki sauce, beer, garlic, ginger, onion, black pepper and salt. Place roast into marinade, cover and refridgerate for 6 hours, turning often. {Like I said, I did for only 20 minutes and flipped once}
2. Preheat an outdoor grill for indirect heat. Remove the roast from the marinade and pour the marinade into a saucepan. Bring to a boil and cook for 5 minutes. Set aside to use as your basting sauce.
3. Thread your roast onto a rotating bbq spit {read: above about lost spit} above indirect heat. Cook the roast for 2 hours, or until the internal temperature of the roast is at least 145 degrees F {83 degrees C}. At 145 degrees your meat will still be pink on the inside, so if you don't like any rareness I suggest cooking a little longer, especially if you don't have a spit/rotisserie. Baste often during the last hour with reserved marinade. Again, since I didn't have a spit handy I made sure to baste often throughout the cooking so that my meat wouldn't dry out. I flipped it every 20 minutes and made sure to baste at least 3-4 times per side, per 20 minutes.

Calories: 714 per serving {obviously will be +/- depending on your bbq sauce etc.}
Servings: 6 servings

Simple Hushpuppies
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook time: 20 minutes
Ingredients:
1 qt. veggie oil for frying, or as needed {if you have a deep fryer, use that...doing it this way was a pain in my rear}
3/4 cup milk
1 egg
2 tablespoons minced onion (I used 3 tbsp onion powder bc I forgot an onion at the store)
1 cup baking mix {this is bisquick or the like...}
1 cup cornmeal {I prefer the traditional yellow}
1 teaspoon salt

Directions:
1. Heat oil in deep fryer or large saucepan to 350 degrees {I just put a little piece of the mix in and when it started to pop, you know it's ready!}
2. Whisk milk, egg, and onion together in a bowl. Stir pancake mix, cornmeal and salt into milk mixture to form a smooth batter.
3. Scoop ping pong ball-sized balls of batter using a small ice cream scoop {or regular spoon}; drop about 5 scoops per batch into the hot oil. Fry until golden brown, 5-6 minutes. Remove hushpuppies with a slotted spoon and drain on a paper towel lined plate and repeat with remaining batter. ***When you are putting the scoops in the oil be very careful as hot oil splashes like water....and burns!***

Enjoy!

Mom Brain

I know I have been HORRIBLE about blogging lately and this is the last time I am going to apologize about it, promise.
With that being said I just HAD to blog about the worst part of pregnancy and being a mom...the only bad thing as far as I am concerned and that is Pregnancy Brain and Mom Brain. Did you know that while you are pregnant you lose 5% of your brain capacity (I have heard) and you NEVER get it back? Well I am here as a testament to this fact. Here are some of my "greatest" mom brain moments.

J: (while getting his lunch together for work) Babe do we have any milk?
Me: Yeah! We have a whole head of lettuce in there!!
J:.......?

While baking with my sister...
B: how much butter do you need?
Me:......*stares*
B:....Haleigh......how.much.butter
Me:......I'm thinking

B: here let me help. What do you need next?
Me: butter goes in bowl
B: okay
Me:.....*stares*
Me: (5 minutes later) Wait, not THAT bowl

Oy....I do hope this gets better lol and here's a cute picture to tide you over until my wordless Wednesday post :)

Chalk one up for the Hokey Pokey

So I know I have been completely MIA on here lately and while I am really sorry, I'm also not. Why? You ask? Because I am enjoying every millisecond of being home with our son.
Hudson changes so much day to day, even that I fear if I don't soak every bit in I'll never get it back. That being said, I HAD to share tonight's adventure...
He has been going through cluster feeding for the past day and a half. Screaming to let me know he is hungry...again. In between feedings? We sing. Pandora has a bunch of really awesome toddler and kids' radio stations and they play all the songs we sang with my mom as kids.
So this evening {literally 5 minutes ago} none of the songs were appeasing him and he had just eaten and gotten a clean diaper...we were quickly approaching defcom 5. And that's when it happened, the hokey pokey came on, I stood up...and let's be real...I put my right hand in and my right hand out, and I shook it all about, then I did the hokey pokey and I turned myself around and you know what happened as I finished my turn? Hudson smiled his biggest smile all day.
It's the little things, people. The dogs have no clue what's going on and I never thought I would do it as a grown adult...alone...in my living room...to entertain a baby but I did, and it felt great.
These moments...the stupid, silly, utterly embarrassing moments..well...those are the ones I'll never get back. So, ill continue to do the hokey pokey, and any other embarrassing song my son wishes because that smile...
It melts my heart!
Love to you all,
Hal

Hudson Fischer...he's here! {Birth Story: Part 1}

This is Hudson's birth story, maybe Part 1...I haven't decided how long or in how much detail I will go yet...so bear with me. It is not an experience that I wish to relive, although I replay it in my mind daily. After every replay, on the verge of tears...I remind myself...good came out of this. My son and I are both here, and we are both alive and healthy. He is the good that came from this horrible experience...
Monday (the day of my last post), another midwives appointment with a NST-non stress test (tracking what they thought was probably pre-eclampsia, which ended up being Pregnancy Hypertension. note to pregnant mommas, when they tell you to keep your stress levels down, they arent kidding...)That evening I had some pretty intense Braxton hicks...inconsistent and they went away once I relaxed in bed. (And after I talked to my Dad, mom AND sister).
Fast forward to Wednesday, J had the day off and I had a full honey do list...clean out my car so we could install the car seat, finish packing the hospital bag, pick out a final "coming home outfit" in addition to some house stuff I wanted done. What got done that day you ask? Absolutely nothing...until that night at 10:30 when I talked to my mother (who now tells me I had a huge tude) in full blown panic attack. Nothing got done, I'm not prepared and we have to do the hospital bag...RIGHT NOW. J thought I was just being hormonal and told me we would do it in the morning first thing before he had to work at 1. Nope, not good enough...we need to do this and it needs to be done...NOW. He finally caved and I sat in the glider in the nursery dictating all the things I had on my list (I wasn't "allowed" to help...bed rest and all) so by around midnight (after I had cried a few times about not feeling prepared, my fears about bed rest, pre eclampsia, hypertension, and everything in between) we crawled into bed, vowing that we wouldn't make any assumptions or stress about anything until after my appointment the next day...we would know more then.) We said a prayer and went to sleep.
Thursday morning I woke around 6:30 and huh...that sort of hurt...I haven't ever had Braxton hicks in the morning. Then again...uhm this doesn't feel like Braxton hicks. I laid there, J snoring as I counted how long each contraction lasted...one Mississippi, two Mississippi... When they got to be 45 seconds long, I decided to get up out of bed and take a shower...I needed something to keep my mind off of these "Braxton hicks". I decide to take my time, hey my legs need to be shaved. I finished up shaving (sorry if that's TMI) and that's when I noticed a little bit of blood. This scared me so, from the shower I yelled for J. "J...you need to get in here!!!" Apparently I sounded panicky because when he stumbled (he isn't a morning person) into the bathroom he was clutching his back "Babe you scared me, I pulled my back"...to which I said "oh yeah? Well I'm pretty sure I'm in labor so you better go coffee up and take some ibuprofen because I don't want to hear any more about this 'back pain'". After 59 questions, he went down to make his coffee and I called my midwife, yes these are more intense than the other BH I experienced, not a lot of blood, every 3.5 minutes lasting at least a minute long, for about the past 45 minutes to an hour....obviously getting another 59 questions from my midwife. She said she would call me back in an hour or so but that instead of coming in at 11:30 for my scheduled appointment, I needed to be there at 9:30 so they could check me, then they would decide if I needed to head to the hospital. That next hour and a half dragged by. I did my hair and makeup, then made J drive me through chick fil a for some pre-delivery breakfast (I was positive Hudson was planning on making an early arrival and refused to starve for the next umpteen hours).
We called our parents-don't do anything until we talk to the doctors! We arrived at the office only to be shuffled around like a normal appointment. "Go pee in a cup" "wait until they call you" "weight and blood pressure" all the while I am having consistent contractions, every 3 minutes lasting for a minute, to a minute and a half. They finally put us in the last waiting area before you are taken into a room and we were waiting with another couple, bless her...she was 41 weeks (obviously past due and miserable) and here I am, almost 37 weeks (half her size) and having contractions....I believe her exact words were "I hate you". She went on to tell me she had to wear her husbands socks because she was so swollen, nothing else would fit...oh and the clogs she wore? Only shoes she had that fit her, all I could think was "dear God take me back and check me already!" I was talking best I could in between contractions and letting J pick up the lag during.
Finally they put me in a room where my midwife confirmed I was, in fact, in labor.....DUH. 3cm dialated and 90% effaced and was in the throes of my "bloody show" (sorry...this is a play by play...could get more graphic so stop reading if you can't hang ;) ). Lindsey, our midwife, then drops a bomb on me. The midwife on duty tonight? Well she has the flu...and none of the other 3 are available...so between 5:30 and 11 there would not be a midwife on call. This NEVER happens she assures me, you probably won't have him until after 11 any way so don't worry. And if you do? There are tons of qualified doctors who are familiar with midwife practices who will do an amazing job. Which is when I told myself, don't panic....everything will be just fine...and I truly believed it. I prayed and put it in His hands.
We are in labor...3 weeks early...holy shitballs (I'm paraphrasing here but I'm pretty sure at some point I did use that phrase...
We head to the hospital (Which is actually connected to the Doctor's office but you have to drive around to a different entrance/wing). So we get to the "circle drive" where they offer this amazing valet parking for dads whose wives are in labor (so we don't have to go in alone, they park your car and you just pick it up when you check out!) we inform the valet that I am in labor and he gets on his official looking earpiece/walkie talkie telling them they have a lady in labor. Another MIB official (hey that's what they looked like...Men In Black...) comes rushing out with a wheelchair...uhhh I would rather walk if that's okay with you...(sitting through contractions...no thank you!) we check in at the front desk then are lead upstairs by Mr.MIB to L&D. I was in a great mood, no induction and in a few hours we would be meeting our son! Laughing and joking, pausing for contractions, Mr. MIB said he had never had such a pleasant woman in labor...I informed him it was because I am a grade A bad ass :) and modest, too! Lol
We get checked into our room and meet our nurse, Donna. She would be with us the whole time. Lindsey came to check on me around 1pm, we had been at the hospital for around 2 hours by this point and boy does time fly when you are in labor! She checked me again, holy cow she says....you're already 5 cm! You are flying through labor...at this rate your son will probably make his appearance around 8 or 9. Well that's great, but there won't be a midwife here...Don't worry she said, Dr. M (won't post her real name because what I will have to say about her later will make a sailor blush) is on call and she is an awesome doctor. Great... Since this was so far out of my control I focused on my contractions. I spent most of my laboring on a birthing ball (genius invention) and enjoyed the experience with J. I was silent during contractions but was able to talk happily in between... I even face timed with my sister. Her and J poked fun because I would contract then go back to talking like nothing had happened. I was so ready for this! Donna got J some cookies and crackers (which I made him share with me even though they said no food) and even offered tons of encouragement "wow, you are laboring awesome!" "Are you sure this is your first?" "You must have a really high pain tolerance" I had the support and encouragement I needed, until 5 pm. TBD (the bitch doctor) popped in to introduce herself. "Since you aren't quite 37 weeks, you need an IV"... To which I told her I would not be having an epidural so I did not need one. "You need antibiotics" she said. "Was I positive for Strep B?...no? Then I do not need antibiotics" this is obviously where we got off on the wrong foot. I finally conceded to get the antibiotics, listing the medicines I was allergic to. The woman doing the IV was horrible, leaving me with my entire hand and wrist bruised for weeks. Then they administered the antibiotic, apparently a sister drug to the exact drug I had JUST told her I was allergic to, which obviously then prompted an allergic reaction. Luckily I just get a rash...hives...and nothing more serious. I told Donna I didn't want to be confined to the bed...Hudson was not handling the labor well, especially when I was laying down. On the birthing ball? Seemed to be doing just fine. However, after the antibiotic/allergic reaction she told me I needed to be in the bed for a bit so they could monitor Hudson better. About 20-30 minutes later TBD comes back in. She says she wants to plea with me...please get an epidural...IN CASE we have to take you for a c-section. I told her I needed a minute to talk to J and form some questions. She didn't like it but left and came back. I agreed to the epidural (wasn't happy but wanted what was best for the baby). I signed her papers and she sent off for the anesthesiologist. When she got there she talked through everything and I admit, I was a little weepy when she was explaining it to me. "You know, we can just put the catheter in without the medicine, that way if we need it we can utilize it but if we don't then you can still have your natural birth" well...that sounds like an amazing plan! I received the epidural catheter with no medicine. TBD comes back in telling us how glad she is that I just agreed with her and got the epidural since, after all, she has been doing this for 16 years and knows what she is doing. I told her the great news...what the anesthesiologist told us. This is when things went even more south. TBD was pissed and made no effort to hide it. Even making a joke, "so since you only got 1/2 an epidural do you get a discount?". From that point on she was rude and unprofessional. I didn't understand because the anesthesiologist told me this was a great option....I wasn't trying to be a pain! And TBD said we MIGHT need a c-section, nothing urgent and wasn't 100% for sure.
At this point Donna tells me they need to give me a shot of something (I don't remember what) to slow my contractions, it's 6pm and I am going through transition (I seriously felt like I was seizing I was shaking so much) she tells me I need this shot because Hudson's heart rate decelerates with every contraction....they think he is squeezing the cord and they need to relax my uterus. I agree to the shot and my labor almost all but stops.
TBD comes back and tells me we will be going for a c-section, baby isn't tolerating labor. Again I ask her to give us a minute, she tells me "I have been doing this for 16 years and I know what I am doing. I am on call for the rest of the evening so it isn't that I have any where else to go, I'm not calling for a c-section because I have somewhere else to be" uhm...ohhhkay? I still have a few questions. By the time she comes back and I get through my questions. She gets the anesthesiologist to prep me for the c-section. While he is going through details my contractions come back in full swing. My mom arrives and Donna sends J into the bathroom to change into scrubs. At that point I look up at Donna, I feel like I have to poo, I have to push...how do I not push...what do I do!? I am panicking. I have already consented to the c-section but the urge to push is overwhelming and I can't stop my body. The nurse checks me, you are complete, let me grab TBd...we might be able to have this baby the way you want after all! I tell my mom she has to leave and somewhere in all of the commotion the anesthesiologist leaves. TBD comes in, she starts yelling at everyone. This is the part that is the most difficult for me...the part that is burned into my brain. She is yelling "I told you to sign that paper 20 minutes ago! Donna why are you letting her push!?" I am mid contraction/push when she roughly shoves her hand inside me to check my dilation.
As I write this, I fight back tears...that had to be one of the most crude and painful experiences of my life.
She yanks her hand out and continues yelling at everyone. J is holding my leg and everything feels scary and out of focus. He tells me now there was a lot of blood coming out and he heard Donna say she felt his head. I yell back..."we fuc*ing heard you! Stop yelling! I consented to c-section, this is what you wanted now do your damn job!" I was hurt and angry and scared and I didn't know her and felt like I had to fight her every step of the way....it wasn't supposed to be like this! If she would have just communicated with me, told me it was more urgent, brought the anesthesiologist back in...I don't know...
They wheel me down the hall (I'm pretty sure my legs were open porn star style for everyone in the hall to see) they are moving me on to another bed and the anesthesiologist gets ready to put the medicine in my epidural, he says "we have time" and TBD says "No, knock her out". Looking back, I feel like she did that to spite me, there was time, the catheter was already in place and with the test they had done earlier they knew I was very sensitive to the medicine and that it would only take seconds to take effect. I made her angry and she was going to have my son's birth on her time, her way.
The next thing I know, I am waking up in a recover room...alone with some nurse I had never even seen. "Where is my husband? I need my husband" once they knew I was stable they brought him back. J informed me that they shoved him in the hall and didn't tell him anything. He saw TBD leave the Or but she said nothing to him, he didn't know the condition of me or our baby....
Donna came out a while later and told him baby and I were both fine. We were wheeled up to my post partum room where we waited on the nurse and spoke briefly with family. We weren't allowed to see our baby until 1am....he was born at 7:15 pm.
Hudson was in the NICU, he was small...4lb 8oz. The size was proof of the hypertension...the blood vessels to the placenta must have been restricted limiting his growth at the end, but he was healthy. He would stay in the NICU until they knew he was stable.
I was sore but able to move around by the next morning. My midwife, Jan came to check on me. I filled her in on what happened...apparently she had already heard TBD's side and was shocked to hear how the details differed. Apparently she had told Jan that I was pushing to be defiant, not because I actually felt the urge...among other things.
After talking to my mom I also found out that TBD was in the lobby after I delivered and was questioned by my Father In Law. This is the information she told them..."As you know we had to take her back for an emergency c-section. There was a power struggle and she refused the epidural which is very unfortunate. She didnt trust me. I hate when women are like this because it is selfish and the husbands/dads really lose out on the experience..."
How could she tell our families lies? How could she communicate with them before even telling my husband, the baby's father what had happened and how we were!? And you are damn right I didn't trust you, you were rude, unprofessional and needed a few hundred more lessons in bedside manner...
I didn't see her again...and I hope I never do. Piecing everything together is really saddening, and maddening to say the least. Had she been open and offered answers to our questions, and communicated what was going on with Hudson I would have cooperated 100%. It is normal to have questions when you have had a natural birth plan with a midwife and are thrown into a medical intervention with a doctor you don't know and don't trust. I can whole heartedly say I did not trust her, she had been rude and callous thus far, AND had approved an antibiotic that I was allergic to! I couldn't trust her competency at face value, to me...she was a young cocky doctor who thought she knew me and knew what was best. She acted like she was doing me a favor by giving me an epidural, and joked once I had gotten just the catheter "oh is it only half price if you only get half of an epidural?" Unprofessional and out of line. I know I have repeated some things but it still is all so surreal.
From the on I spent as much time as I could in the NICU and can't say enough great things about the nurses there. Levine Children's Hospital is one of the bests and I am glad Hudson got the best care he could. The first few days he wasn't eating much,low blood sugar and could not come to our room. A few days later they discovered he was jaundiced, that's why he was too tired to eat. After a day in the billybulbs (the blue UV lights) he was doing great and I was even able to Breastfeed! The nurses in the NICU were awesome and even got me a pump to keep down there so I really could spend as much time as I wanted down there. Christmas Eve I was discharged and they informed us in the NICU that they were moving Hudson to "progression" and if he did well over night we would be released Christmas Day! They were able to get us an "in suite" room, sort of like a hotel room. We got to spend our first night together, Christmas Eve. The nurse assigned to us had me check in every time he woke with an update. (How much he ate, his diaper status, an if I wanted him to bring a bottle of warm breast milk I had pumped from earlier.) Christmas morning they came and took him for his last panel, a billirubin screen. They brought him back an hour later, levels were perfect! We would be released...Merry Christmas! Oh but one last test...bring in your car seat, he has to sit in it for 90 minutes while being monitored for respiration rate. During that time we went to find out where J's car was parked and popped by the cafeteria for some cereal...they were in between meals and that was pretty much all they had.
We got back to the on suite and watched Christmas movies on TV until they brought him back and helped us gather our things. The MIB guys in the circle drive helped J install the car seat and after 5 whole days...we headed home :)

I am happy to say that almost 7 weeks later, Hudson is almost 7lbs and thriving. I am learning to talk about his birth a little more each day but usually sum it up that he just didn't tolerate labor, the real story is just too long. Two of my midwives have told me they failed me, and I agree. I still think they are amazing and I will continue to use them but if I decide to have another I will be having a serious pep talk with them beforehand. I am torn with filing a formal complain against TBD...do I want to bring it all back up again so it doesn't happen to someone else? Or do I want to just try to let it go, chalk it up to the perfect storm and a horrible experience... I'm sure whichever I decide, Hudson, J and I will continue to grow and thrive regardless of the situation....
Please keep any and all comments positive, I don't need or want to give anymore explanations.

Love to all,
xxx

New Year Catch-up

So I have been really MIA, but for a really good reason. Hudson Fischer made his appearance quite early, on December 20. Hello tax break?
I'm sure I will get around to posting his birth story but it was not the experience I had hoped for and I am still trying to cope and wrap my head around it...it is sitting in my drafts...empty.
Today is the perfect day for a catch up becauuussseee our handsome little man is ONE MONTH OLD! This month has flown by. My mom came and stayed to help me out while J went back to work, she was here 2 weeks and I can't say enough how much help she was. Hudson was born by emergency C-section so although I was moving around really well, there was still a lot I wasn't supposed to be doing. She helped do all the house stuff so I could focus ALL my attention on the new man in our lives.
I couldn't have ever imagined how much of an impact he would make on me, an our lives. I could literally sit and stare at him for hours, I am in such awe. Here are 10 thing I have leaned about him, and about being a new mom...
1. Breast feeding takes work. Don't lose patience and don't be too hard on yourself! At the end of the day, Hidson is getting breast milk and that is the best thing for him!
2. Any plans you had before on what you will and won't do with your baby....probably will be thrown out the window. That whole "I won't hold him all the time, he needs to self soothe" yeah right.
3. Not all babies are the same. They won't grow the same, like the same things, or have the same strength.
4. Hudson has already rolled from back to front, and front to back a handful of times...I really have to watch him.
5. He wants to look at me, and possibly try to eat my face every time I burp him. Lifting his head up on his own and looking around. He has done this since 1 week old when we were released from the NICU.
6. Your spouse is not a mind reader, is you need help...ask for it!
7. In turn...they will continue to sleep how they always have. He won't wake up with every sneeze, cough, hiccup....breath....like you as a new mommy will.
8. Babies will do something every single day that melts your heart. When I feed Hudson on the left side, he holds my ring finger....I may or may not have teared up the first time he did it. He does it every time and I would be lying if I told you I wouldn't be sad if and when he stops.
9. Wait at least 5 minutes after you hear them take a big poo...chances are, they aren't done. I speak from experience!
10. Everyone tells you how fast they grow up and change...they are absolutely right. Hudson has lost his "newborn" look and sometimes looks like a little boy, like he has skipped the "baby" phase already. I can't deal!

Happy One Month Birthday little boy, we love you so much already and can't wait to see what new things you have in store for us!

Baby Update {Just another Manic Monday}

Hi all! Wanted to give you a quick update. I had another appointment yesterday with our wonderful midwife, Jan {she's sort of my favorite} and we had a NST along with the regular midwife's appointment. And we got some GREAT news.
My 24 hour urine results came back and the protein levels were much more acceptable so that means, no early preeclampsia. {Wouldn't have it just been easier to tell us on Friday that it wasn't a definite thing??}
Anyways...since it is not preeclampsia, that means it is just Pregnancy Hypertension or high blood pressure. Bed rest is still key but Jan does not think we will even go to 39 weeks. She basically told me that Thursday will be very telling and that I need to have my hospital bag packed because at any of these appointments they could be sending me straight over to the hospital to get bebe Hud out.
The surprising thing? For once, I didn't panic. I called J and he was supportive as ever....I think we were both relieved that it isn't preeclampsia {yet...although there is a chance this could develop into preeclampsia}.
I was able to talk to Jan about induction options. I have been against pitocin from the beginning and knowing now that I will have no choice but to be induced {unless he comes early on his own accord} I want to know my options. We spoke about a foley bulb {inserted into the cervix. The inflated end of the catheter applies pressure to the cervix which helps the cervix open or dilate. When the cervix opens to 3 cm, the catheter will slide out on its own and the labor may start without any medicines.}Obviously the non medicine route is the one we would like to take but know that every L&D is different so we are keeping our options open. We want what is going to be best for Hudson.
Next appointment is on Thursday, we'll have another Ultrasound {maybe he'll cooperate and we can see his face!} so I'll try to do another post that afternoon or next day. And one of these days I promise I'm going to get an up to date bump picture {it doesn't seem like there has been much progress on that front so I haven't taken one}
Until then....

36 Weeks {Just another P}

I have been dragging my feet on this post a little bit because at first I wanted to wait until after our 36 week appointment with our midwife, but Thursday's appointment came and went, and 2 midwife appointments and 3 days later I think I am finally ready to talk about what we learned.
Remember all those other P's I talked about...wayyyyy back at 18 weeks? Well I was thinking once the Previa went away we would be free and clear of any complications.....a girl can hope...right?
Thursday's appointment started off without a hitch, until they took my blood pressure. Normally my resting is around 114/68 or so and this week? 132/92...they were a little concerned but my midwife told me that baby's heartbeat sounded great {still in the 130s} and that maybe it was just a little raised because of a stressful day. She said...We will just check it again at the end of your appointment--perfect. She did the Beta Strep swab and cervical exam {1cm dilated and already 80% effaced....Off to a great start!}
She takes my blood pressure again and I'm back down to 118/76...much better. We'll just keep an eye on it and check you at your next week's appointment {once a week now..in the home stretch!}. So I get dressed and am putting on my shoes when she rushes back in, so glad she caught me...
....I think...this can't be good. And ask her what's up. I have proteins in my urine and coupled with the high blood pressure she is concerned I may have early preeclampsia.She tells me I need to stay home from work on Friday, in bed as much as possible and do a blood panel and a 24 hour urine, then come back to see her or one of the other midwives. {24 hour urine test is super gross, basically you pee into this jug for 24 hours then take it in to the lab and they test it for proteins}
Thursday night J was closing at work and luckily someone was able to come in. I was a little bit of a mess because everyone kept asking me if I was feeling okay, like they expected me to fall out on the floor right there. J rushed home {picked up dinner} and did an amazing job spoiling me and being my rock. Although he is usually the worry wart but throughout this pregnancy whenever something happens, he has been the level headed one who keeps me grounded.
Friday we were both home from work, and since the midwife stressed that I take it easy on Friday, J was doing all the last minute things to pick up the house {my mom and sister, conveniently, were coming into town!}. So I basically laid around and peed in a jug-I was so bored. I prayed that it was a freak combination and that maybe I just spilled some protein-something the midwife said was a possibility.
We went back to the midwife around 3, my bloodwork looked great, urine was a protein +2 {which is not high at all...just high enough} but my BP was again at 138/92...
Hallie, one of our midwives, listened to baby again {BP still around 130s and where he should be} then talked about my lifestyle. What do you do for work? I told her I was an event planner, but mostly sat at a desk all day, not running around and I didn't consider it really stressful. Unfortunately, she did not agree. Event planning=Stressful Profession. Hudson will not be making it to the full 40 weeks, but hopefully to at least 38 or 39.
Even though my preeclampsia is early and very mild, it will only get worse. And ideally, Hudson will be able to stay in as long as possible...as long as it's safe for the both of us. The positive side of Friday's appointment? We got to have another ultrasound. Although, he was very uncooperative and did not want to be messed with. She tried so hard to get him to show us his face and he was just not having it. Hands covering his face and feet covering his boy bits he hunkered down in a baby cannon ball. Good news? He is still head down, facing my back bone {probably why I keep getting his hiney poking out} and growth is right on track. Measuring at 5 lbs 7 oz {obviously give or take a lb}.
With the preeclampsia, I'll start going twice a week to see our midwives. Tomorrow I will go for a NST {Non-stress test} then Thursday for another ultrasound, both days meeting with my midwife to check my blood pressure and talk about a plan.
The worst part? I am officially on bed rest, only supposed to be getting up and moving around to shower, use the bathroom and eat. This is going to be the biggest challenge for me, I am not good at sitting still and hate making everyone else do the things I can't. My mom and sister are here, mom went to the store and cooked up close to 20 meals to freeze for J and I, since I won't be cooking. All I could do was sit there and watch {mom let me chop onions....woo hoo?} Already not a fan of bed rest and I'm only on day 3....
How far along? 36 Weeks
Countdown: 1 month {hopefully}
Size: Up to about 5 lbs 7oz {says the ultrasound we had on Friday}
Total weight gain: +25 lbs total
Maternity clothes? Yes, but still mixing them with some of my regular clothes
Stretch marks? Getting worse but they're mostly skin toned so only I notice them
Sleep: Sleeping in the guest room is helpful because the mattress in there is firmer and I don't have to battle with a wiggly husband who can never get comfortable.
Best moment this week: Seeing our baby {even if he didn't cooperate and show us his face}
Miss Anything? Definitely wine
Movement:Shifting positions but no real kicks/jabs/punches
Food cravings: Wanting "fresh" things. Smoothies, veggies, fruits
Anything making you queasy or sick:Nope!
Gender: Baby Boy!
Labor Signs: Braxton hicks with back pain...especially when I have been too active. Which apparently I'm not allowed to do anymore so I'm sure some of these will stop
Symptoms: High blood pressure {for me}and peeing every 5 seconds.
Belly Button in or out? Barely in...I don't think it's going to pop though.
Wedding rings on or off? I'm down to wearing just one band...I'm getting sick of taking them on and off at night
Happy or Moody most of the time: Getting a little more moody, but I think that has to do with the whole, not having a plan thing.
Looking forward to: Thursday when we get to have another ultrasound
Next Appointment: Monday....twice a week from now until he comes!

Mini Series: Wedded Bliss...{Intro & The Proposal}

So a few bloggers I follow are getting married soon and I can't help but think back to that stressful time in life.

Because let's be honest...it is really stressful.
Do you hire a planner, what do you splurge on and where do you cut corners, what really matters and what do you obsess over because you think that part has to be perfect?

There are a billion questions and details that run through your mind and for me, that happened meer hours after I said "yes" while bawling my eyes out on Christmas Eve 2010 standing under that spotlit tree, in the snow, with the most beautiful diamond I had ever seen. {Of course I am biased}
So I was thinking...I should do a mini series on weddings since it is an obsession a love of mine. If I weren't an event planner for larger events I would be planning weddings every day for the rest of my life.

Without further ado, I'm going to start at the beginning. The proposal, of course!

Here is our proposal story. Since I am a control freak, when J took me ring shopping after visiting almost every store and trying on every shape and setting possible...I said "I want that one, and I want you to buy it right now" and so he wouldn't lose the ring of my dreams...he did just that.

The ring is so important and you really have to stay true to what you love. I had always dreamed of a Tacori 3 stone ring with tons of detail and when it got down to it, I put that ring on and had zero connection to it. My heart was pulled to a simple, classic, round cut solitaire with a high setting---a ring that sparkled. Something so simple and classic that if I decided to, I could pass down to our children one day and it would still be in vogue. Two years later....that ring was presented to me and I still loved it then as much as the day I picked it out.

Gents....stick with the surprise. Even if she says she doesn't want a surprise {like me-I almost ruined it by trying to cop out of the family tradition} it will mean so much to her than you went to such lengths to keep it a secret and make it memorable--FOR HER.
It isn't about extravagance. You need to focus on what's important to you all as a couple, for us...it was family. And to be honest, although I said I wanted it to be some extravagant thing in public where our friends and family popped out at the end...it was so much more special the way that it happened....it was us

Girls....Don't play detective!!! I got my hopes up so many times thinking he was going to do it {since we had the ring for 2 years, I knew where it was "hidden" or in our case...where it was taunting me} and before any big occasion or date night I would check. just don't do it. It will ruin the night or occasion because you will be wondering when it will happen. Let the man be the man!

Mini Series: Wedded Bliss {Our proposal}

I started a mini series and realized...I never told our story! And I may be biased...but I think it's a pret-ty good one.

The top to said very unattractive outfit.
Rewind to Christmas 2010. Our years old Christmas tradition is to get together with his cousin E {she was a Jr. Bridesmaid in our wedding} and do some sort of fun craft. This year? We chose to make Hard Candy. So the three of us, along with J's younger brother and his girlfriend came over and we spent all day goofing off, making candy and getting excited for that night. See J's family has a tradition of their own, every Christmas Eve they all get together at his grandparents' house and play BINGO for money, lotto tickets and other fun prizes {everyone brings a thing or two}.

Once everyone left I started to feel really bad, overtired, and just dragging I sent J and text message asking him... "how bad would it be if I missed BINGO this one time? I feel like death and I never win anyways" and we went back and forth..."they never get to see us since we live in North Carolina...you need to come" was the final verdict. I complained to my parents that I really didn't want to go and my dad made a comment "Maybe this will be the best game of BINGO you have played in your life" I told him not to be an asshole {joking of course, I wouldn't ever purposefully be disrespectful to my parents} and went upstairs to take a quick nap.

After said nap and throwing on the most unattractive outfit I could have packed, headed to J's parents' house to help carrying things over {his parents, grandparents and aunt/uncle all live within walking distance} so instead of driving over we decided to walk since we hadn't had any time to ourselves and I wasn't feeling the best.

My rigged BINGO card
We got to his grandparents' and visited with everyone, ate then all hunkered down in the living room to play BINGO. 8 rounds we played that year {me with another crappy card that I continued to flip back and forth even though it was against the rules}....and by the 9th round we were all ready to go to bed, stomachs full. But his Memaw said this would be the last round, and that we wouldn't be playing for the normal prizes....there was a special surprise outside that was too large to carry in.

This new development had us all wondering what it was....I was thinking...it has to be something like a TV! She is stumbling through the numbers {J's uncle and cousin usually control the announcing but she said they were moving too slow and she was taking over} and we're all complaining that we just want coffee and dessert. Then BAM  it happened...I WON!

And like a complete fool I start jumping up and down. Y'all I wasn't kidding when I said I NEVER win at BINGO....like seriously never. And hello....I had just hit the jackpot! I was so deliriously excited that I didn't even see J duck out of the room. I race to the front door and turn to see that no one has followed me...I say "Uhm hello....y'all don't want to see what I won?!" nope, no one was interested....

This is a cell phone picture but the only
one I apparently took...
Then I opened the door and it completely clicked. From the door to the large oak tree in the front yard were hundreds of red rose petals and a rigged spotlight shining up at the tree. In the tree hung a little gold box with a big red bow and silver tinsel....I knew that little gold box....I had been staring at it for years as it taunted me....

The ring
Don't ask me specifics on what happened next because all I can remember is J on one knee saying something, me shaking and bawling--saying YES, us kissing, running inside {where of course everyone already knew} and texting/calling everyone we knew.  Bless his heart because I had been flipping my card every single round, completely oblivious to the fact that J had memorized the numbers on one side of my card-gone to the kitchen-done some 007 sneaky number swap with his Memaw and had rigged the game...I almost blew it

In the end, I am glad that this one holiday, this one big occasion I steeled myself and didn't check the ring before we left our home in Charlotte, NC. I am so glad he chose to propose around our family, and that he put so much effort into making the proposal something I would never forget...

I can admit I am very biased...but I caught a keeper. A man who knows what I like and what I don't and what is best for me even if I don't agree...

Thank you, dear husband, for making this night one I will never forget, and for bearing with me when I almost ruined the surprise....on multiple occasions :)

35 weeks

I need to start this post by saying...bless my hubby's heart. He's a good man who puts up with my crazy schenanigans. In this case? It was a serious case of "nesting" completely out of the blue. Yesterday morning I got up and decided I needed to do some laundry, then got downstairs and decided I needed to wipe EVERYTHING down with Clorox wipes. I'm talking walls, doors, floor trim and any non fabric accessory within reach. While obsessively cleaning I got the idea that the family room furniture HAD to be moved and it had to be done right that minute.
And I must say, a deep clean, new arrangement and holiday decorations had me sleeping like a baby last night {except for the 3 dreams that woke me up panicking thinking that I was in labor}.
Pictures of the new set up are below and the 35 week baby bump is on its way, but until then...here's the update!
How far along? As of Wednesday, officially 35 weeks
Countdown: 5 weeks left!
Size: Up to about 5.8 lbs and around 18.7 inches, and he is right on track. No longer measuring big! Coconut size?
Total weight gain: +25 lbs total
Maternity clothes? Yes, but still mixing them with some of my regular clothes
Stretch marks? Same
Sleep: Sleeping better...it's the avoidance thing...I'm telling you
Best moment this week: My work family threw me a baby shower!
Miss Anything? Definitely wine
Movement: I think he is definitely running out of room. Much less movement {flips/kicks/jabs} and more of the fluid...I can't move my arm anymore
Food cravings: None.I'm back to...nothing sounds good.
Anything making you queasy or sick:Nope!
Gender: Baby Boy!
Labor Signs: Braxton hicks with back pain...especially when I have been too active.
Symptoms: Lower back pain...pretty constant and just uncomfortable.
Looking forward to: Appointment next week and my Momma coming down!
Next Appointment: Next week! December 13th...we're going to ask the midwife if we can drive home to Virginia for Christmas...cross your fingers?

What's the plan...

Wow...I am that horrible blogger who has come to the point in the road where I am only blogging once a week....when I have to do my weekly bump update???
How did it come to this?!

Unacceptable

Here I am world...turning over a new...diaper?
It seems like all my brain is filled with these days is avoiding thinking about the fact that my son will be here in around 5 weeks. Granted we are completely and totally ready but I would also be completely and totally lying to you if I told you it didn't freak me out just a little bit.

See, as many of you know...J and I live right outside of Charlotte, North Carolina. Our parents? Live 5 minutes apart from each other....5 hours away...from us.

Sucks, right?

This makes it really difficult for me to even think about how it is going to be when I go into labor. And if you have read anything in the About Me section...you know how anal retentive I am about having a plan. My poor husband still doesn't quite grasp the concept that I have to have something in writing outlining exactly what is going to happen. And that whole...outline thing...HASN'T HAPPENED YET.

I realize I still have 5 weeks but still, any time I think about it....well we just aren't going to go there.

When will everyone come down? Where will they all stay? Will they be offended if I only want immediate family at the hospital? What if I want them to leave their beloved pets {who they always bring with them} at home? What if I get home from the hospital and completely lose my shit on someone because I'm exhausted from pushing a 6-9lb baby out without drugs??

These questions....this is why I haven't been blogging. Avoidance, my friends...avoidance.

What advice do you have for a plan? And please don't tell me..."Don't make one" because then I might really lose it....

.....just kidding!

But not really...

Back on track....34 weeks

We just had an appointment yesterday and it seriously took forever.
Appointment was at 3:40 and because I hate being late...it's seriously my least favorite thing in the entire world...we got there at 3:25ish.
We waited only 5-10 minutes before they took me back for the usual pee/weight/blood pressure {which btw...I'm going to be a pro at peeing in a cup...TMI? I'm sorry I'm not sorry}
Then that's when the waiting began. We seriously waited at least 45 minutes before the nurse took us back to be seen by our midwife. That was the longest wait we have ever had and I know I shouldn't complain because I know sometimes medical offices fall behind {curse of having parents in the medical field}but I was getting so stir crazy I started walking up and down the hall. Hm...maybe that's why they took us back? Pregnant lady waddling up and down the hall?
One of the nurses that knows me by name even commented saying "They haven't taken you back yet??" and every time she passed we exchanged giggles and eye rolls.
But here we are....in all our 34 week glory! The black is slimming no? You can hardly even tell I'm pregnant.....right? :)

How far along? As of Wednesday, officially 34 weeks
Countdown: 6 weeks left!
Size: About 4.75 lbs and around 18 inches, and he is back on track. No longer measuring big! Cantaloupe size?Total weight gain: +25 lbs total...yikes, thanks a lot Thanksgiving!
Maternity clothes? Yes, but still mixing them with some of my regular clothes
Stretch marks? Same
Sleep: Finally have the pillow situation down pat...and I'm only getting up once in the night for potty breaks :) Last night I got the BEST night of sleep I have had all pregnancy. The pillow arrangement...perfection!
Best moment this week: Watching Hudson move and shift in my belly {did you see his hiney?}
Miss Anything? Sushi....and wine!!! I really needed a few glasses of wine earlier this week...
Movement: Lots, and still the same...much less "kick" and jerky, and much more fluid, you can see him rolling around in there switching positions to get more comfortable.
Food cravings: None. I'm still at "I'm hungry but...what do I want??"
Anything making you queasy or sick:Nope!
Gender: Baby Boy!
Labor Signs: The other night when decorating I kept getting back spasms while I had the braxton hicks....but sitting down with my feet up made them go away
Symptoms: Lower back pain...pretty constant and just uncomfortable
Belly Button in or out? Barely in...I don't think it's going to pop though.
Wedding rings on or off? On but I still take them off to sleep
Happy or Moody most of the time: Getting a little more moody.
Looking forward to: My mommy coming back into town. The hospital we are delivering at offers a Grandparent Class and Tour of the hospital so she is going to come for the weekend and we're going to go together!
Next Appointment: 36 weeks...December 13 then I'll start going once a week! Eeek!

I started decorating the house for Christmas and I'll do another post hopefully this weekend once I finish. I'm thinking a trip to Michael's is necessary for me to make at least one DIY holiday project :) don't you think??

Back that thang up....

As I have said the past few weeks, baby Hudson is favoring my left side. Although he is head down, he swings his butt over and my stomach sometimes is uneven.

I haven't been able to catch it on camera....til now.

Uneven belly...why dontcha back that thang up :)

Still hangin out on that left side!

View from up here...

The view from up here...can you see my toes? Cuz I barely can!!

I was totally off the grid for the holiday weekend and I have to tell you...it was pretty amazing. I barely got on Facebook, Twitter or Blogger {which all of you know is a rarity for me!} but as I told y'all before...my family came into town!
I am SO thankful to have parents who are willing to drive down to visit and help me complete a laundry list of projects {in addition to cooking a delicious Thanksgiving meal}.
 And when I say laundry list...y'all...I feel bad with the amount of stuff we had to get done in 4 short days! But you will be happy to hear{and see} that the nursery is almost completely finished!
So without further ado....here's just a teeeeny tinnnyyy sneak peak into the nursery.
Bedding....CHECK
Lighting.....CHECK
Closet....CHECK
Dresser....CHECK
Accent Wall....CHECK CHECK CHECK!!! {This is my favorite part}

The picture here to the left you can see the bedding a little and our amazing mobile that J's mom found at Pottery Barn Kids {they are little elephants with wings....completely adorbs} and it's even on a wooden arm so none of that junky plastic look! We really wanted to focus on creating a nursery that was soft and relaxing...and ultimately, I have always said, I want this to be an adult room that accomodates a baby. I really wanted Hudson to be able to grow into this room and lets face it....not all the baby bedding these days is conducive to that. Now I know he isn't going to want to keep the little lambs, elephants and other baby type items, but by keeping all the colors soft and neutral, it is a room he can definitely grow into.

For lack of a better word...I wanted a CHIC nursery. Clean lines, but not modern. Neutral colors, but not boring. I'm not the type of person to have a "baby on board" sticker in my car window, or loud obnoxious cartoons all over every inch of the room. A nursery {like a bedroom} is a place for sleep, a place to relax....I think...after much hard work...this nursery is exactly that.

Now...for my pride and joy {only a sneak peek though...}
This is an idea I snagged from Pintrest and ever since I saw it, I just couldn't let it go. Since we started planning everyone kept asking..."What is your Theme" for the nursery and I really couldn't tell you. Like I said, I hate the kitchy chachski items so I knew I didn't want cartoons or animals really.
That's when I found this image and I fell in love. Why not have an alphabet centered room? Lots of different typography and focus on the amazing lines our letters create? Now, for Hudson's room...I had to tone it down a little, her images' frames were much more ornate and feminine than I wanted so I focused on clean lines and really stuck with "less is more". I found these amazing letters on Etsy, they're from Alphabet Boutique, this made it much easier because the letters were already cut into assorted sizes and fonts and came with letters A-Z with an "&". My favorite letter? The "O" because it is cut to look like a button. The only downside? We had to paint all the letters {thank youuuuu Daddy!}
The dresser seen here {well the edge of it} was a craigslist find for only $125! When we bought it, it was an ugly oatmealy cream color and was distressed. I was originally leaning towards painting this dresser to add a pop of color {we were thinking Robin's Egg Blue} but after much discussion, J and I just couldn't see it in the room....so it went white to match the Jinny Linde crib that I couldn't live without. The white totally compliments everything in the room and has enough detail to be beautiful but not enough to be "girly"...plus this is a piece that can grow WITH him! We opted for a dresser instead of a changing table because let's face it....they aren't practical. You use them for maybe two years...three tops, then they sit in your garage until you have another baby and I don't know about y'all but we really don't have the garage space to store a large furniture piece like that. And realistically, we didn't have room in the nursery for another piece of furniture. We chose one of the smaller bedrooms upstairs knowing that it would be a nursery as soon as the house was built. The dresser was just something I wasn't going to compromise on....it's 12 drawers and every single one of them is packed full of baby clothes...there is no way we could have had a place for all that stuff without a dresser. Yet another reason why we opted for the dresser instead of a changing table-there is hardly any storage space in a changing table and let's be honest...Hudson already has as much clothes and J and I combined, pretty much, so we really needed that storage!!

Also in this picture you can see a little bit of the bedding, now the American Academy of Pediatrics says no bumpers because baby could roll into it and suffocate. We made one anyways and will probably use it until he starts moving around in there. At first, babies are pretty immobile so I'm not too worried about it. We chose to do the ties in the ticking accent to give it a little umph. The only other place we used the ticking {navy and cream striped fabric} was the crib skirt which you can't really see from that angle. We did a thin quilt with yarn pull throughs and called it a day. I am absolutely in love with all of the bedding and the fact that my mom and I spent hours working on it, is something I really cherish. It is something really special for her Grandbaby that I can tell him when he grows up....

So there you have it....a sneaky peek of Hudson's nursery. The closet pieces are done and organized, all his baby clothes are washed and either folded or hung and organized by age and now all that's left to do is to find my finishing touches...those things that make his room...his room.

Hope you like it! Post any questions below...or you can pop back to my original post here to see the pattern and up close views of the fabrics we chose.
